This is Mac DeMarco’s autumnal moonscape, a story told with an honesty that only emerges in the deepest hours of the night. For all of Mac's goofy and downright crazy tendencies, at the center lies a fine songwriter with a knack for writing reflective tunes, and This Old Dog stands as his most consistent and musically deep album. This Old Dog is Mac Demarco’s fourth studio album, and possibly his most diverse yet. But with This Old Dog, DeMarco invites the listener back into the fold with gusto, and the material connects like a punch to the gut. While taking the laid-back vibes of Salad Days forward, he strips down to the acoustic guitar for much of this album with great success, while also including some of the keyboard hooks ("For the First Time", "One More Love Song") that 2015's Another One helped propel him to stardom in the indie rock community. Verse 1 Ab Bb Bb Ab Sometimes my love may be put on hold Ab Bb Bb Ab Sometimes my heart may seem awful cold Ab Bb Bb Ab. I was hoping for more from his new album, more groovy bass solos and songs dedicated to his favourite brand of cigarettes, not just lyrics about how his heart has been broken. With 2017's This Old Dog, Mac Demarco demonstrates what his long-time fans have known for awhile now - his knack for writing a heartfelt tune With 2017's This Old Dog, Mac Demarco demonstrates what his long-time fans have known for awhile now - his knack for writing a heartfelt tune that James Taylor or John Lennon would be proud of. There is no strumming pattern for this song yet. Mac DeMarco has delivered another hazy offering, 'On The Level,' from his upcoming album 'This Old Dog,' which finds the 26-year-old in a reflective mood.
Although I do enjoy this song, it’s one of those you wouldn’t skip if it came on shuffle but you also wouldn’t purposefully put it on. Mac’s combines his raspy voice in two different tones creating a harmony with himself which is very typical due to him recording all of his own songs. There is no build up to anything, the song stays fairly constant and at one pace with no real change in vocal tone with exception to the chorus. The song is very piano heavy with a gloomy chord progression and Demarco’s classic multi-tune instrumental in force. While it’s possible to say that Mac Demarco being an electronic music artist is quite a stretch his nostalgic use of synthesis, especially in recent work such as ‘This Old Dog’ have proven he is capable of using elements of synthesis to build important melodic and timbral layers in his tracks. With the little pops of 80’s synth influence throughout and an inoffensive, mellow bass line the song is surprisingly catchy for such a miserable melody.Īs the song begins, I am reminded of what I have heard in certain elevators or when I’ve been put on hold by the bank. It sounds like he has collated all his sad songs and ever so carefully combined them together to make One More Love Song. The pace is slow, very calming and easily described as easy listening. The melody and vocal performance are tremendously similar to a lot of his previous music. McBriare Samuel Lanyon (born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV on April 30, 1990), better known by his stage name Mac DeMarco, is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi. The lyrics of One More Love Song are slightly depressing, a real tear jerker and wonderful to listen to if you’re not feeling great. Any help is appreciated, Im just a few gaps away from having it down pat. Upbeat, happy songs containing jazz influences that make it difficult not to bob about in your seat.ĭemarco’s new album, This Old Dog, seems to be following more of a sombre root. I know the chords (Fmaj7 -> G13 -> G6 -> F), but Im having a hard time figuring out all the 'individual' notes he plays in between the chords, as well as the strumming pattern. My favourite album of his was undeniably 2 featuring beauties such as Annie and Freaking Out the Neighborhood.
